Google to challenge Apple with online TV

GOOGLE is to launch an online pay-per-view TV service offering films, sport and shows over the internet.

The company has signed up ITN, CBS and Sony BMG to provide programmes for the new Google Video Store. It will see shows such as CSI, Survivor and the US version of Big Brother available online, using software similar to Apple's iTunes.

Prices are expected to be Pounds 1 to Pounds 1.50 per TV show, with movies and live sports events costing more. Sources told the Wall Street Journal the service would be one of the most ambitious attempts to bring TV content to the internet. The move will be announced later today by Google founder Larry Page at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

It will pit Google against Apple, which recently began selling TV shows through its iTunes music store.

Apple claims its service has been a huge success and sold over a million videos in the 20 days after its launch. However, the company is believed to be struggling to find partners for countries outside the US.
